Form Follows Fiction.
11/29.Contributed by Jane Mica

Form Follows Fiction is an exhibition that has made the fictional tangible, examining daily conditions that often go unchallenged. Our designs stem from personal essays written by Nicholson Baker, varying on the topics of life, reading, libraries & newspapers, technology, and war. Guided by Professor Isaac Gertman in the Advanced Design 1 course, our designs are the result of intensive inquiry into intriguing topics found in Baker’s essays. Our research process was informed by typological studies, during which we questioned, for example, the figurative qualities of our topics and the possible metaphors embodied within them.

Relating largely to themes of construction, translation, and behavior, the breadth of variety in our designs can be found in selfies at a photobooth, or in rearrangement of furniture, or in performance of a puppet show. Our projects aim to challenge conventional perceptions: What is the difference between words and pictures? What does a memory look like? Why must a space be square? Are you scared yet?

Form Follows Fiction will be exhibited in the Bronze Gallery until December 2. Learn more about us and our projects at formfollowsfiction.xyz.
